Why you should update your will as you age – Chris and Raelene’s Story

Story Wills

While thinking about death can be daunting and often overwhelming, it is so important to prepare for the inevitable so we can ensure our assets are protected after we pass. Particularly if you have children that live overseas or complex circumstances, ensuring you have an up to date will is vital. For Chris and Raelene, updating their will was a must on their to-do list when COVID-19 hit.

“We had a will that we created around 30 years ago. At the time, we only had one child and minimal assets, so it was well out of date. Given we’re only getting older, and have superannuation and more assets to consider, we thought it was about time to update our will.

With a diverse pool of assets and three grown children, two of whom reside overseas, Chris and Raelene recognised there was a layer of complexity in their circumstances – particularly when it came to allocating an Executor – so decided to schedule an appointment with a State Trustees will writer.

We wanted to ensure that there was no misunderstanding about our wishes, or who gets what. We now know the kids are looked after, the grandkids are looked after and there is nothing left unsaid.

Creating a will via State Trustees gave us peace of mind. The process itself was simple, straightforward, and painless. The team was so understanding of our questions and made sure we knew all the options. We never felt rushed, and we appreciated that there were a number of meetings during the process to ensure we got it right.”

While getting around to doing your will may be difficult, it is a huge comfort when you actually do it because you know that when your time comes, your wishes will be respected and you’ve done everything in your power to ensure your family is looked after.”
