5 tips to live on and live well

Live a happy and fulfilling life
Modern life is not always smooth sailing but people who work to be healthy and calm from the inside out certainly reap the rewards of living happy and fulfilling lives. According to Australia’s Health 2014 [i], a report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australian men and women can expect to live approximately 25 years longer than they did one hundred years ago.
Here’s five things you can do today to help keep your body active and your mind stimulated so you can live on and, live well.
1. Be active
Physical activity is important for adults aged 65+ to keep healthy. The amount of activity you need to do depends on your age and the state of your health. Get started with aerobic activities like walking, yoga, swimming, tennis and golf and consider muscle-strengthening exercises to keep you in good health. If you don’t already exercise, consult your doctor before you start exercising.
2. Be passionate
Passions give people a sense of purpose and can help you feel that you’re on the right life journey, inspiring you to live happily in the here-and-now and into the future. Whether it’s an activity like volunteering; a hobby like gardening or knitting; or a sport like golf or bridge, indulge your passions and live on. If you don’t have passions, don’t worry, it’s never too late to find some.
3. Be social
Maintaining social activity is important as we age. Being connected and going out with friends is good for you as regular social interaction can help improve your quality of life, your health and mental wellbeing. Being social can also help keep your mind engaged and sharp as you connect you with our ever changing world.
4. Be mindful
‘In today’s rush we all think too much – seek too much – want too much – and forget about the joy of just being.’
─ Eckhart Tolle
Essentially mindfulness is an ‘in-the-moment’ approach to living which you can master through meditation practices, controlled breathing and body awareness activities, such as tai chi and yoga both of which can be beneficial in easing stress and anxiety. Let go and learn to meditate.
5. Be remembered
How will you be remembered? Your life story might be a tale of overcoming the odds; a rags to riches story or the story of a life well lived. Consider what it is you might want to share with your loved ones and write a legacy letter. No matter what your story is, it can inspire generations to come and live on as your legacy.
