What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme is Australia’s new disability care scheme, which gives people with an ongoing disability, their families and carers the support they need to live a full life.

What does it mean?

Participating in the NDIS means you move into a system that gives you greater choice about the disability services and support you receive, giving you greater control over the quality of your life.

Am I eligible?

The NDIS is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), an Australian government body that determines participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

In order to participate in the NDIS, you will be assessed against a series of residency, disability and early intervention requirements and questions.  If you are unsure of your eligibility for NDIS funding, you will need to contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or visit their website to assess yourself against the criteria.

Some of the assessment criteria include:

  • Australian citizenship
  • Your age
  • Your place of residence
  • The support you require to do everyday things for yourself because of a permanent condition
  • The support you may need today to reduce your future support needs

How do I get started with NDIS?

For anyone who currently accesses disability services and support, the NDIA will contact you to begin planning for your transition into the scheme.

Speak to your current service and support providers about being NDIS ready, or contact the NDIS for more information about preparing to enter the scheme.

How do I create a plan?

From 1 July 2016, everyone who accesses the scheme will be supported by the NDIS to develop their initial support plan. Before you enter the scheme, it is a good idea to consider the support you might need to achieve your goals. Your plan is to be reviewed 12 months after it is created.

What does my NDIS plan cover?

The NDIS aims to fund ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports that help you to live a fuller life. Your supports are unique, and your plan will be created to suit your circumstances. Supports can include therapies, equipment, modifications, participation in community activities, assistance with employment, training and education etc.

What are ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports?

The scheme identifies reasonable and necessary supports as things associated with your daily life and activities that increase your social or economic participation; resources or equipment, e.g. a wheelchair, that helps you live your daily life; and things that help you build life skills, or increase your opportunities to work, volunteer or further your education.

What is funded?

The supports that may be funded by the NDIS for you include:

  • Your daily personal activities
  • Transport to enable participation in community, economic and social activities
  • Workplace help to allow you to get or keep employment
  • Therapeutic supports, including behaviour support
  • Help with household tasks to maintain your living environment
  • Skilled personnel to aid in equipment assessment, set up and training
  • Home modification and design
  • Mobility supports including vehicle modifications

How am I funded?

You can choose the funded supports to suit your circumstances. There are five options available to you to manage your plans. They are:

  1. Agency managed – where service providers claim directly from the NDIA
  2. Plan manager – a third party is allocated to manage the financial transactions in your plan
  3. Self-managed – when you, or your nominee, directly manage the funds and complete the required documents for services provided to you
  4. Automated payments – these funds apply for transport only and are deposited into an NDIS approved bank account either weekly, fortnightly or monthly
  5. Combination – you may use any combination of the above options to create a plan that best suits your circumstances

What isn’t funded?

Supports will not be funded if they are not related to your disability or they duplicate other supports already funded. Daily living costs that are not related to your support needs, or anything that is likely to cause harm to you or others is not funded.
